Dr. Carlos Monteiro is a Professor of Nutrition and Public Health at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Head of the University’s Centre for Epidemiological Studies in Health and Nutrition. His research lines include methods to assess populations’ nutritional and food intake, secular trends and biological and socioeconomic determinants of nutritional deficiencies and obesity and other nutrition-related chronic diseases, food processing in the food system and human health, and evaluation of food and nutrition programmes and policies. He has published more than 100 journal articles and many books and chapters on these subjects. He has served on numerous national and international nutrition expert panels and committees. At present, he is a member of the WHO Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group and the scientific advisory committee of the International Obesity Task Force. In 2010, he received the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Health. Dr. Monteiro acquired both his MD and PhD, at the University of São Paulo and completed postdoctoral training at the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University.
