EAT Stockholm Food Forum is an important occasion to get together and discuss challenges and solutions

Norway’s Minister of Health and Health Care Services Bent Høie, one of five Nordic Ministers talking at the EAT Stockholm Food Forum 2016, describes the forum as an important occasion.

“What can politicians from different fields and countries achieve by discussing common solutions to the challenges regarding food, climate and health?”

“To get a common understanding of the situation and what it takes to solve the problems, it is central that politicians talk to each other. International cooperation is important because the challenges are global. The new sustainability goals by the UN are central in this matter. It is a big step that the world has agreed on common goals for sustainable development, in which goals for food, climate and health are important elements. We need to look at the whole food chain and work towards a sustainable and fair distribution of food. Nearly 800 million people in the world are starving. At the same time overweight is an increasing problem. I am pleased the new sustainability goals suggest several new and ambitious goals related to reducing non- communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart diseases. A healthy diet is one of the most effective measures to reduce the prevalence of these diseases.”

“How can politicians work with business leaders, scientists and others to find solutions to the global food challenges?”

“I find it important to work with business and industries to produce healthier and more sustainable food. I have therefore initiated a cooperation with the food industry to reduce the content of salt, sugar and saturated fat in food we consume a lot of. To get the consumers to eat more healthy food products, such as fruits, greens, wholegrain products and fish, is another goal of this group. Globally it is important that the multinational food producers and other parts of the food chain take social responsibility and develop healthy products, regardless of which countries the products will be distributed in.”

“What is your own motivation for participating at the EAT Stockholm Food Forum 2016?”

“EAT Stockholm Food Forum is an important occasion to get together and discuss challenges and solutions. I am convinced that politicians must work together with business, experts and volunteer organizations to find solutions for sustainable food production and diets. People’s health as well as the climate benefit from it.”
